  • MOUNTAINS, RIVERS AND HILLS

"Mountains, rivers and hills" - this is the title given to the improvement concept of Solnechnaya street by the winning team of the Russian urban hackathon "Cities" held in Satka on June 16-18.

Let us remind you that 15 young architects – students from various universities of Russia – took part in the Hackathon. They conducted large-scale research under the direction of Pyotr Tolpin, the chief curator of the “Cities” project in the Chelyabinsk Region: they studied the story of the street, the master plan diagram, the pedestrian and traffic areas, its accessibility for people with limited mobility, analyzed social and cultural issues and other important features of the area, took into account the needs of local people. As a result, the participants developed three projects for the full-scale improvement of Solnechnaya Street. The winners are Vadim Gulyaev from Novgorod, Valeria Zhivenko and Anna Konovalova from Volgograd, as well as Elena Pudova born in Magnitogorsk and now based in Moscow.

“I’ve been to Satka as a tourist several times, I really like the city. That’s why I was glad to take part in the development of the improvement project for its main street,” says Elena Pudova. “Why did our team call the project ‘Mountains, Rivers and Hills’? Because they frame the street. We propose to merge the street and the yards into one space. To add environmental art objects, to create a smooth transition from the street to the yards with the help of architectural forms, which will echo back to the mountains and hills.”

The architects believe that it is possible to make Solnechnaya Street a vivid extension of Proletarskaya Street by landing red maples, wild grapes, chestnuts there. Pergolas (supporting structures for climbing plants) will create coziness and comfort. Small utility objects can become a canvas for graffiti.

The best project of the Hackathon will be implemented with the support of the municipal administration from 2022 to 2025.

OPINION:

Alexander GLAZKOV, head of Satka Municipal District:

“It’s nice that Satka became a platform of the Russian Urban Hackathon this year. I would like to say thank you to the Russian Cultural Center and our strategic partner, Sobranie Cultural Initiative Supporting & Preservation Fund. I thank the Union of Architects of Russia and the Moscow Institute of Architecture. All projects are worthy, I say thanks to the young urbanists and architects for a new vision of one of our most visited streets – Solnechnaya Street. I hope that the best renovation project will be supported by the people of Satka District and implemented in the future.”

Natalia NIKIFOROVA, Director of Sobranie Cultural Initiative Supporting & Preservation Fund, Director of Corporate Development and Strategic Communications of Magnezit Group:

“We were happy to welcome the young urbanists in our city, to tell them about the projects of the Sobranie Fund and Magnezit Group, which have been transforming the environment and the social and cultural agenda in Satka for the past 10 years, and to invite them to create together. We hope that Solnechnaya Street will become a new powerful point of attraction in the city in the course of the dialog with the young professionals; that it will become more convenient to hold the major cultural events of the city, all necessary infrastructure will be developed, the street will become more friendly to the citizens. We hope that the urban hackathon aimed at strategic points of the city development will become a common practice, and more municipal objects will be transformed within its framework”.
