  • The Satka City Museum of Local Lore: Another Step Towards Renovation

25.03–25.03

The Satka City Museum of Local Lore was opened more than 60 years ago (http://museysatka.ru/). During this time, its collections were supplemented by numerous exhibits – there are more than 25 thousand pieces at the moment. Minerals, archaeological and paleontological samples, rare old printed editions of 17–19 centuries, collections of tableware and gifts of domestic factories and much more appear among valuable collections. The museum has something to show to the local people and city visitors, and now it has a chance to bring it to a fundamentally new level.

At the end of the last year, a concept of the Satka City Museum of Local Lore renovation was developed at a request of the Sobranie Fund. According to the concept, the museum is transformed into a laboratory to study the relations of a modern man, nature and society. This is where art and technology meet: they are not in confrontation, but seek ways for unique synthesis. The museum should become a hub to disseminate information on natural, historical and industrial heritage of the Satka District.

The basic elements of the museum infrastructure are also subject to changes. For example, its permanent exhibition will occupy the main part of the museum, about 800 square meters. Another 400 square meters are intended for temporary exhibition galleries. There will be also an educational center for Satka’s people of all ages and an arts and crafts center providing an opportunity to work with popular local materials and unleash creativity. About 180 square meters will be allocated for a transformer room for lectures, concerts, film screenings. It will be suitable for both small, chamber events and for medium-sized events up to 80 people. And, of course, other parts of the museum will be expanded and improved – the halls for indoor and outdoor storage, the archive, the art library, the work premises, the service area of the museum and etc.

In early March, the proposed renovation concept of the Satka City Museum of Local Lore has received a positive feedback from the expert council of the State Historical Museum of Southern Urals. Vladimir Bogdanovsky, the Director of the Museum, and Alexander Lymarev, the Deputy Director of Research and Development are convinced that, after the planned changes, visitors will see the museum completely transformed, and its technical capabilities for the organization of exhibitions, workshops and lectures will be significantly enhanced.

“The concept is not just a theoretical model, a generalization of the practical experience of other museums is presented here, real prospects are demonstrated. The concept of the Satka City Museum of Local Lore deserve credit and concept’s implementation,” Vladimir Bogdanovsky concluded in his review.
